Description
Leaning against a wall in Tuanshan Historical Village in the Yunnan Province of China, I was captivated by the colorful tunic and hat worn by this Chinese laborer, a woman, easily carrying heavy buckets to and from a construction site. The color stood out in contrast to the yellows and browns of the surrounding buildings in the corridor she was walking in. Tuanshan was founded as mining center in the late fourteenth century, and many of the buildings date from the 19th century. To capture the image I first laid in a quick sketch using a soft charcoal pencil. Then I added the brick and other details with a selection of color pastel pencils. The flowers and color on the woman's tunic I was able to create using special patterned brushes in the Procreate pallet. A final wash of color was overlayed using a wet brush and watercolor. The entire work is created virtually on my iPad Pro with Procreate and using an Apple Pencil.
